Their Own Identity

I see quite a few parents who are using their child to fulfill a gap in
their own life. An example of this is forcing your child to do an activity
because you always wanted to do that activity, or you did it as a
child and did not do as well as you wanted.

I have found these activities to include:

playing a musical instrument
taking dance
trying out for the cheerleading team
playing sports
and even taking martial arts classes

I have had parents bring their children to me for class and then are
amazed when I turn them down as a student. During my application process, it is easy for me to learn why a family is interested in my program. If it is simply to fill a void in the parent’s life, I am not interested.

Make sure your child is trying new activities because they want to,
or because you feel there will be a true benefit to them for participating.

I do not expect a child to understand the benefits a good program has to offer. It is up to the parent to do their homework and make sure some goals are set.
