Your First Impulse

Somebody says something rude to you. Immediately, you feel compelled to retaliate. However, by applying some self control, you say to yourself, "They are probably just having a bad day." And you keep your mouth shut.

Usually, our first impulse is wrong. Why? Because it comes from our emotions. It is always a selfish impulse, based on the desire for self preservation.

To conduct yourself well, learn to pause.

Let your better self have its say. Your second impulse will almost always be better than the first.
